Lanolin fatty acid: Composition and specification

Lanolin fatty acid is a valuable by-product obtained through the removal of fatty acids from lanolin or lanolin alcohol. To ensure a superior quality product, the acidic fraction is isolated from the lanolin alcohols using molecular distillation. Lanolin fatty acid, regardless of the method of isolation, is a complex mixture of long-chain branched and unbranched fatty acids, with approximately 40% being hydroxylated. Currently, 138 saturated and 32 unsaturated lanolin fatty acids have been identified. Lanolin fatty acid is available in two quality grades, with acid values of 50 or 100, allowing for different applications and specific requirements.

Features and applications: A versatile ingredient for dermatology and beyond

Molecularly distilled lanolin fatty acid retains all the natural qualities found in crude acid while maintaining a consistently low odour profile. This refined solid wax fulfills all the necessary requirements for substituting or supplementing fatty acids in cosmetics and dermatological products.

In addition, lanolin fatty acid exhibits a general antimicrobial effect on the skin, making it a valuable active ingredient in personal care products and treatments for cutaneous infections like acne. Moreover, metal soaps derived from wool grease fatty acids possess excellent oil-binding properties, making them functional ingredients in lubrication soaps. Furthermore, lanolin fatty acid finds applications in various areas, including

  • Solid and liquid polishes
  • Polish emulsions
  • Anti-corrosives
  • Textile additives
  • Cosmetic bases
