Lanolin anhydrous: Composition and specification

Lanolin anhydrous is composed of approximately 97% of a complex blend of esters formed through in-situ condensation reactions of high molecular weight alcohols and fatty acids. These esterified lanolin alcohols can be categorised into three main sub-groups: steroids, triterpenoids, and aliphatic alcohols.

The lanolin acid fraction consists of a variety of branched and unbranched acids, including hydroxy fatty acids. The remaining 3% of the mixture consists of free lanolin alcohols, small amounts of free fatty acids, hydrocarbons (paraffins), water, and ash. Due to its natural origin, the precise composition of lanolin may exhibit slight variations within controlled limits.

Lanolin anhydrous exhibits solubility in organic solvents like diethyl ether, chloroform, and chloroform/methanol mixtures, while showing limited solubility in ethanol. It is not soluble in water but can form stable oil-water emulsions when mixed with it.

Features and applications: Restoring the skin's moisture balance and softness

Lanolin anhydrous exhibits a remarkable water absorption capacity exceeding 200% of its own weight and forms water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions. Leveraging its exceptional emollient and emulsifying properties, lanolin effectively reestablishes the skin’s optimal moisture balance and softness while preserving its natural functions.

The wide-ranging applications of lanolin span cosmetic and medical skin creams, ointment bases, and various other products. The refining process can be customised to meet specific country regulations and intended uses. This adaptable approach ensures compliance with diverse pharmacopoeial requirements worldwide, while also providing cost-effective solutions for technical applications that do not require strict adherence to pharmaceutical standards.
